As sci-fi action blockbusters go, they don’t come much larger than Transformers. Maybe it’s because in the subject matter: it’s based on the toy line from your 1980s, concerning giant robots from outer space engaged inside a civil war that pits the heroic Autobots contrary to the evil Decepticons. They have the capability to disguise themselves as vehicles along with other mechanical objects, transforming back to robots when it’s time and energy to stomp the other person senseless. As a premise, it’s rather silly. But it’s extremely simple, and that’s why it works.
The heroes are truly heroic: the noble and powerful Autobot leader Optimus Prime is one from the most iconic characters in the 1980s, and obtaining the original voice actor (Peter Cullen) to offer him life would be a stroke of genius. The villains, meanwhile, are only plain evil: Decepticon leader Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving) is motivated by absolute power, and his awesome soldiers aren't above a little wanton destruction to attain their goals. Mix inside a little bit of mysticism within the form in the Allspark, the way to obtain life for all those Transformers, and the result's pure cinematic magic.

It’s not a perfect film: there are a few characters and sub-plots which can be unnecessary and which go nowhere, at almost three hours, it’s a lots of movie. But the Transformers themselves, rendered in CGI, possess a very realistic size and weight on screen, and search particularly good since they switch from one mode for the other. Moreover, director Michael Bay is smart enough to understand that attracting kids doesn’t mean pandering to them--the cutest robot on screen can be a manic little psychotic killer using the apt name Frenzy. The humans within the film, meanwhile, maintain your film grounded, whilst never detracting from the real robot stars. Unlike The Matrix trilogy, which tried to become too clever, or The Lord of the Rings films, which were too clever, Transformers is just about the best science fiction epic since the first Alien trilogy. --Robert Burrow
